N. Dakota Lawmakers May Outlaw All Abortions; May Defy Supreme Court's OK of Abortion in 1973

North Dakota lawmakers -- who recently approved some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the United States -- are now considering outlawing all abortions, the One News Now website reports today (March 20, 2013).

North Dakota's so-called "personhood" measures would ban abortions by defining human life as beginning with conception.

The state Senate passed two personhood measures last month, and the House could vote on them as early  as next week. One of the bills would make the proposal a state law, while another is a resolution that would put the definition into the state constitution, if passed by the voters.

North Dakota is one of several states with Republican-controlled legislatures and GOP governors that is now in the process of passing laws on abortion restrictions. A new law outlawing all abortions in North Dakota would be a challenge to the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.
