Man Is Convicted for Tearing Off a Woman's Veil; Did It in Attempt to Back France's Anti-Burqa Law

A French court gave a 30-year-old man a five-month suspended sentence yesterday for tearing off an Islamic woman's veil in an attempt to enforce France's anti-burqa law, the Big News Network website reports today (March 14, 2013).

The man -- whose name was not reported -- pleaded guilty to religious violence and to declaring a false identity to police at the scene.

Police said the man tore a niqab -- a garment that covers everything but the eyes -- off a woman he saw at a fairgrounds in Nantes in September 2012. He was ordered to compensate the woman, who had to take three days off from work after the incident.

The man said he was trying to enforce the 2010 French law banning most face coverings in public.
