Oklahoma has pushed the debate on public dollars for faith-based education into new territory this spring with a proposal for a school that would have been the first of its kind: a Catholic charter school, primarily paid for by taxpayers, the Religion News website reports today (April 20, 2023).
The key question in this case is whether religious instruction at charter schools is constitutional, given the First Amendment's protection against government establishment of religion.
The Supreme Court appears to have favored funding for faith-based schools in recent years, and now there is hope it may approve funding for religious charter schools.
