NATO Delays Its May 1 Afghan Withdrawal Plans; Taliban Broke Its Peace Deal with US Many Times

NATO defense ministers at a two-day video conference at the Brussels headquarters postponed the decision to withdraw their troops from Afghanistan by a date previously agreed upon by the U.S. and the Taliban, since the current level of violence in the country is considered too high, the Euro News website reports today (February 21, 2021).

"We believe there is still time to make progress on a political settlement before the May 1st deadline," said NATO official Jens Staltenberg.

More than 10,000 NATO troops remain in Afghanistan, of which about a quarter are Americans.
