Some 5,200 US Force Heads to Mexico Border; Subdues 7K Migrant Caravan from Entering US

The Pentagon is deploying 5,200 active duty troops to beef up security along the U.S.-Mexico border, officials announced today (October 29, 2018), in a bid to prevent a caravan of some 7,000 Central American migrants from illegally entering the U.S., according to the AFP (Agence France-Presse) website.

About 2,000 National Guardsmen are already deployed at the border.

Nonetheless, the migrants were crossing the Suchiate River from Guatemala into Mexico on rafts made from truck tires, or by forming human chains to avoid being swept away.

Others swam across after Mexican authorities refused to open a Guatemala-Mexico border bridge, located about 1,000 miles from the U.S. border.
