US Plans to Open Its Jerusalem Embassy in May; Move Sped Up to Occur with Israel's 70th Anniv.

The United States now plans to open its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem in May, a U.S. official said today (February 23, 2018), a move from Tel Aviv that reverses decades of U.S. policy, according to the Reuters website.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced last year that the U.S. recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, infuriating even Washington's Arab allies and dismaying Palestinians who want the eastern part of the city as their own capital.

A May 2018 opening represents an earlier time frame than what had been expected. While speaking in the Israeli parliament last month, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said the move would take place by the end of 2019.

The new opening date is designed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel's founding as an independent nation in 1948, said the U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
