Egyptian Parliament Debates Outlawing Atheism; Already against Egyptian Law to Defame Religion

It may soon be a criminal offense to be an atheist in Egypt, the Religion News website reports today (January 5, 2018).

The legislation to criminalize atheism was proposed on December 24 by Amro Hamroush, head of Parliament's committee on religion.

"It must be criminalized and categorized as contempt of religion because atheists have no doctrine and try to insult Abrahamic religions," Hamroush said.

It is already against Egyptian law to "insult" or "defame" religion. A conviction can result in up to five years in prison.
