Protests Rise in France as Govt. Passes Labor Bill; Workers Claim Reforms Will Reduce Their Rights

Fierce protests broke out throughout France today (May 10, 2016), after the government passed controversial labor reforms, according to the BBC website.

The city of Nantes saw clashes between protesters and security forces. In Paris, police fired rubber pellets on demonstrators outside the National Assembly.

The reforms -- which the government says are essential to help cut high levels of unemployment -- make it easier for employers to hire and fire. Opponents fear they will also allow employers to bypass workers' rights on pay, overtime, and breaks.

President Francois Hollande has faced months of resistance to the labor bill from students, unions, and even members of his own Socialist Party.
