US Rips Israeli UN School "Disgraceful Shelling;" Insists Lives at UN Facilities Must Be Protected

"The United States is appalled by today's disgraceful shelling outside a UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) school in Rafah sheltering 3,000 displaced persons, in which 10 more Palestinian civilians were tragically killed," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki, said in a statement today (August 3, 2014), according to the JTA (Jewish Telegraphic Agency) website.

At least 10 Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded in the attack in Rafah, in southern Gaza, at the school run by the UNRWA for Palestinian refugees. Palestinian and United Nations officials blamed the attack on the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces).

The State Department statement was the harshest condemnation of Israeli actions in Gaza.

"UN facilities, especially those sheltering civilians, must be protected, and must not be used as bases from which to launch attacks," Psaki said. "The suspicion that militants are operating nearby does not justify strikes that put at risk the lives of so many innocent civilians."
