Head of UGCC Says Ukraine Faces Difficult Times; Slams Russian Orth. Church's Accusation of Chaos

The head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) has said his country faces an extremely difficult situation and strongly rejects Russian Orthodox Church accusations that his church is responsible for military action taken by Russia in Eastern Ukraine recently, the Zenit website reports today (August 23, 2014).

In an August 22 letter addressed to religious and political leaders and all people of goodwill, His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Major Archbishop of Kyiv-Halych, also described the religious discrimination to which churches and religious communities have been exposed in Russian-annexed Crimea and in the eastern war zone.

"Ukraine needs the effective support of the global Christian community and support of all people of goodwill," he writes. "In a media context rife with propaganda we ask you to evaluate information critically."

He continues "We need your prayer, your discernment, your good words and effective deeds. Silence and inaction will lead to further tragedy."
