The Supreme Court of Greece ruled today (January 26, 2017) that eight Turkish soldiers who fled to Greece after last July's coup attempt can stay in Greece, where they have claimed asylum, according to the Euro News website.
The court decision has infuriated Turkey's government, which claims the eight men are traitors and should be extradited to Turkey.
"The decision of the court was based on the argument that the supreme values of human dignity and human life must be safeguarded," said chief defense lawyer Christos Mylonopoulos.
Turkey has now issued arrest warrants for the eight men, who flew to Greece by helicopter a day after the coup attempt.
