FBI to Probe Bomb Threats at Jewish Centers; JCC Assoc. Views Them as Being Anti-Semitic

Federal authorities said yesterday they are launching an official probe into a wave of bomb threats to U.S. Jewish institutions across the country in recent weeks -- including yesterday when at least 32 Jewish centers in 16 states received threats -- the Times of Israel website reports today (January 19, 2017).

The FBI said the bureau and the Justice Department civil-rights division are investigating "possible civil rights violations in connection with threats."

The JCC (Jewish Community Center) Association of North America said it was "concerned about the anti-Semitism behind these threats. While the bombs in question are hoaxes, the calls are not."

Paul Goldberg, director of Secure Community Networks -- which advises Jewish groups and institutions on security -- said whether the threatened institutions evacuated depended on the practices of local law enforcement.
