A Malaysia Airlines passenger jet crashed and burned in eastern Ukraine today (July 17, 2014), after being shot down by a ground-to-air missile in what President Petro Poroshenko called a terrorist act. All of the 295 people on board -- including 280 passengers and 15 crew members -- are presumed dead, the Kyiv Post website reports.
Security Services of Ukraine chief Valentyn Nalivaichenko said the government is making all evidence in the investigation public, including intercepted phone calls between two members of the Russian military special services unit in which they discussed shooting down the airplane.
Russian President Vladimir Putin denied any Russian involvement, saying Ukraine is responsible.
However, Ukrainian officials say the Kremlin-backed separatists evidently mistook the commercial aircraft for a Ukrainian military one in an area of fighting between the government and Russian-supported forces. Two Ukrainian military planes were shot down in the area by Russian rebels during the past week.
