Mich. Mayor Rejects Atheist Station in City Hall; Likens Atheist Area to Nazi, Ku Klux Klan Station

An atheist resident is suing the conservative Christian mayor of Warren, Michigan after being denied equal treatment under the law, the Addiction Info website reports today (July 26, 2014).

Doug Marshall wanted to set up a "reason station" in the city hall atrium to talk to people about atheism and free thinking. But Mayor Jim Fouts denied the request because he wants the Christian "prayer station" to be the only station in city hall. Consequently, Marshall and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court.

In a statement, Fouts claimed that the Christian station serves a purpose while the atheism station does not.

Fouts said, "The city has certain values that I don't believe are in general agreement with having an atheist station, nor in general agreement with having a Nazi station or Ku Klux Klan station. I cannot accept or will not allow a group that is disparaging of another group to have a station here."
