The Agence France-Presse (AFP) website reports today (January 25, 2012) that a Saudi woman -- who defied a driving ban on women in Saudi Arabia -- was hospitalized with several injuries and her passenger was killed when their car overturned in the northern Hael province on January 21.
Ultra-Muslim Saudi Arabia -- whose capital, Mecca, is the birthplace of the Islamic prophet Mohammed -- is the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive.
Nonetheless, some women -- despite subjecting themselves to several lashings -- sneak behind the the wheel and drive in rural regions.
Women in Saudi Arabia are also required to wear a veil in public, and are not allowed to travel unless accompanied by their husbands or a close male relative.

i know for a fact that yes muslim women cover as part of the modestdressing just like a Christian Nun would do or a practicing Jewish woman would.
ReplyDeleteVeil is worn by many women but is not compulsary in Saudi Arabia nor in any part of the Muslim world.
I know that for a fact cause my parents were living there for 23 years. My mom is an Italian by birth and a revert to Islam lived there with my father for 23 years and not a singke day wore a veil (covered her face) but did cover her head (hair) and her body just like a Christian Nun would do or a practicing Jewish woman would do and she would normally go shopping in public transport. Never was there any problem.
So i dont know why things are mispresented in a way so that the reader starts having -ve opinions. As the window of misrepresentation is left wide open.
Thank your for your first-hand information regarding Saudi women, Papaji.
DeleteApparently, the Agence France-Presse (AFP) website -- from which I received this information -- did not do its "homework" when it said that "Saudi women are also required to wear a veil in public."
