The Providence Journal website reports today (January 18, 2012) that about 230 people packed the auditorium of a middle school in Cranston, Rhode Island last night -- singing "God Bless America" -- as members of the Cranston School Committee took their seats on stage.
The public meeting became a forum where students voiced their views about the meaning of a school prayer banner affixed to the wall of the auditorium at Cranston High School West.
A federal judge on January 12 ruled in favor of a 16-year-old student who sued the district on the grounds that the banner's display in her public high school violates the constitution.
Patrick McAssey, 17 -- a high school senior and president of the student council -- urged the school committee to appeal the judge's decision, saying "If we're gonna go down, let's go down fighting."
No decision was made to appeal the judge's decision by the school committee, which had met to discuss the school budget.
