The World Health Organization (WHO) has dubbed the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, the N.Y. Daily News website reports today (July 23, 2022).
The designation means the U.N. health agency sees the outbreak as severe enough to warrant a coordinated global response in order to prevent it from reaching pandemic levels.
While the WHO warning does not impose restrictions on governments, it does serve as a global call to action, aimed at channeling resources and attention toward the issue at hand.
