Greek Orth. Church Rips Criticism of Communion; Says State's Communion Ban Due to COVID Amiss

Greece's Orthodox Church today (November 16, 2020) condemned as misplaced and "neurotic" criticism of the pursuit of Holy Communion which has been banned by the Greek government in the presence of the public during coronavirus lockdown curbs, according to the AFP (Agence France-Presse) website.

The Holy Synod, the church's ruling body, said it had cooperated with the state from the beginning of the crisis and complies with health measures.

The church insists it is impossible for COVID-19 or any disease to be transmitted through Communion, the tradition of handing out bread and wine from the same spoon and chalice.

Doctors and experts say the coronavirus can be transmitted through saliva.
