Pope Calls on Christians to Call God "the Father;" Says "Our Father" Prayer Lets Man Speak to God

Pope Francis is urging Christians seeking to nurture their spirituality to embrace calling God "the Father" in favor of other honorifics, the Newsweek website reports today (June 8, 2017).

"Calling God by the name 'Father' is not something that can be taken for granted," the pope said.

Francis has sought to use his position to change the direction of the Catholic Church on divisive issues such as poverty, clergy reform, climate change, and divorce.

In his latest public address, Francis said the "Our Father" prayer underscores how man can speak directly to God, "who always watches us with love, and who surely won't abandon us."
