Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch Gets Patriarch; Metropolitan John X Elected by Vote of 18 Bishops

Metropolitan John X was elected to lead the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch yesterday, the Greek Reporter website reports today (December 18, 2012).

His predecessor -- Patriarch Ignatius IV (Hazim) -- passed away in a Beirut hospital on December 5, a day after suffering a massive stroke.

Metropolitan John X (al-Yazigi) was chosen as the new head of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch.  The vote took place in the Balamand Monastery (near Tripoli, Lebanon), in which 18 bishops participated.

Yaziji, 57, hails from Syria's Lattakia, and earned a bachelor's degree in theology in 1978 from the Institute of St. John Damascus. He then earned a doctorate degree in theology in 1983 from the University of Thessaloniki in Greece.
