Islamic State (IS) gunmen attacked security forces yesterday near St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, Egypt, killing one police officer and injuring four others, the UPI website reports today (April 19, 2017).
St. Catherine's is part of the Greek Orthodox Church and a UNESCO World Heritage site visited by thousands of tourists and pilgrims each year.
The Islamic State was also responsible for the bombings at two Coptic Orthodox Churches in Egypt on Palm Sunday that killed 45 people.
The Egyptian terror incidents have raised fears on the safety of Pope Francis, who is planning to visit Cairo at the end of this month.
