French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said yesterday that French authorities have shut down 20 mosques and prayer halls they found to be preaching radical Islamic ideology since December, The Atlantic website reports today (August 2, 2016).
"There is no place... in France for those who call for and incite hatred in prayer halls or in mosques," Cazeneuve said.
The mosque closures follow several high-profile attacks by Islamic extremists in the country, including the recent murder of an elderly Catholic priest while he was celebrating Mass in Normandy.
France has been under a nationwide state of emergency since the ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) terror attacks in Paris in 2015. The state of emergency grants the nation the ability to enforce tougher measures, including shutting down places of worship suspected of promoting radical views.
