Brandeis University -- a Judaic-oriented institution of higher learning in Waltham, Massachusetts -- was maliciously bad-mouthed by Ayaan Hirsi Ali yesterday for abandoning its plan to award her an honorary doctoral degree at its upcoming graduation, the Inside Higher Ed website reports today (April 10, 2014).
Ali -- who has been an outspoken critic of Islam -- released a statement denouncing Brandeis for saying it was "unaware" of some of her past statements when it first decided to honor her.
She said, "The slur on my reputation is not the worst aspect of this episode. More deplorable is that an institution set up on the basis of religious freedom should so deeply betray its own founding principles."
Ali added, "The 'spirit of free expression' referred to in the Brandeis statement has been stifled here, as my critics have achieved their objective of preventing me from addressing the graduating class of 2014. They simply wanted me to be silenced."
