A public school in Vienna, Austria has removed the crosses from all classes, the Austrian Times website reports today (May 21, 2013). This was sparked by the mother of a pupil who believed the crosses reflected religious paternalism, as less than half of the pupils were registered as Christians.
According to the initiative "Religion is a private matter," several similar complaints exist at a special registration office.
It is expected that additional parents will now claim their right of freedom from religion in Austria's public schools.
Austria's secularism has grown significantly in recent years -- due mainly to the revelation of a multitude of Catholic clergy abuse cases -- so that about one-third of Austria's eight million people are now atheists.
