Russians and Militant Muslims Clash in Chechnya; At Least Four Russians and Four Muslims Killed

The Europe News website reports today (January 10, 2012) that a clash between Russian troops and militants in the predominantly Muslim republic of Chechnya has left at least four Russian soldiers and four Muslim militants dead.

Chechnya -- although a republic -- is controlled by Russia, and has joined Russian troops in battling an Islamist insurgency.

Russia's interior minister said the firefight -- which occurred on January 8 in the Vedensky district of the Caucassus Mountains -- began when a well-equipped rebel base was discovered.

About 95 percent of Chechnya's population is Muslim, while more than 70 percent of Russia's population is Orthodox Christian.
