Egypt's Christian Leaders Seek Islamic Dialogue; Believe Dialogue Can Reduce Sectarian Violence

The Ecumenical News International website reports today (January 6, 2012) that Christian leaders in Egypt have been meeting to discuss opening a dialogue with Islamic groups as a way of addressing sectarian violence.

Ahead of the Eastern Orthodox Christmas -- which is celebrated on January 7 -- His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church leader, met on January 5 with Anglican Church leaders.

Their discussion focused on how they could begin "constructive dialogue" with the Islamists, who have won a majority in Parliament.

The meeting of the Christian leaders was sparked by the victories of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and the Nour Party in the elections that began in Egypt on November 28, 2011.
