Almost a quarter of the world's countries witnessed a surge in protest and unrest last year, and a new study shows that figure is set to soar in 2020, the CNBC website reports today (January 16, 2020).
There are 195 countries in the world -- including the Vatican and Palestine -- and a newly released index of civil unrest shows that 47 of those states witnessed civil unrest in 2019.
The data model -- published today by the socio-economic and political analysis firm Verisk Maplecroft -- predicted that in 2020, the number will balloon to 75 countries.
Countries viewed as hotbeds of civil protest for 2020 include Sudan, Yemen, Nigeria, Lebanon, Bolivia, Ethiopia, India, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe.
