Pope LeoXIV told sick pilgrims and health care workers in Lourdes, France on Sept.27that they "must reject the temptation to cause death under the cure of false compassion," the Christian Daily website reports today (Oct. 11, 2026).
The remarks, delivered at a center for sick and pilgrims, came less than two months after France'sconstitutional council cleared the way for a national law permitted assisted dying. In the address, the pope did not name a specific country or bill.
Leo acknowledged that illness can leave people uncertain and without hope. "But no human law should ever make you long for the certainty of "what your dignity" will be, adding that" it is legal, but "is not necessarily moral."
