India Court Decriminalizes Same-Sex Relations; Says Sexual Orientation Prejudice Is "Irrational"

The Supreme Court of India issued a historic ruling today (September 6, 2018) by decriminalizing same-sex relations, according to the UPI website.

The high court had criminalized consensual sexual relations for same-sex partners in 2013, based on a colonial-era law that made same-sex relationship an "unnatural offense" punishable by 10 years in jail.

Today, justices called that law "irrational," "arbitrary," and "incomprehensible."

"Any discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation violates fundamental rights," Chief Justice Dipak Misra, head of the five-judge panel, said in today's ruling.
