EU Rejects Turkey Due to Its Poor Human Rights; An Enraged Turkey Calls EU Assessment "Bigoted"

The nation of Turkey -- which has been trying unsuccessfully to join the European Union (EU) since 2005 -- has issued a strong attack on the EU for what it calls a "bigoted" assessment of Turkey in its recent report on EU membership requirements, the Voice of America (VOA) News website reports today (January 6, 2013).

The EU has been extremely critical of Turkey's deteriorating human rights.

Turkey's minister for EU membership, Ergemen Bagis, claims such criticism of Turkey by the EU is "bigoted" and "politically motivated."

Several EU nations -- including France, Greece, and Cyprus -- have repeatedly blocked Turkey's obsessive attempts to join the EU over the past several years. These nations -- as well as the EU itself -- have made it perfectly clear to Turkey that it cannot join the EU until it gives up its control of the northern third of the island of Cyprus, which Turkey illegally seized in 1974.
