Officials in Central Java Province, Indonesia halted construction of a church and religious tourism compound following pressures from local council members and Muslim groups, the Christian Daily website reports today(Sept. 26. 2025).
The Karaanganyar Regent on Sept. 2 suspended construction of the Immanuel Christian Church building and the Holyland Bukit Dona religious tourism compound of the Indonesian Bethel Church.
The letter of suspension stated that several community groups opposed the project, believing it could create social conflict. Construction may continue once the issues with the local community are resolved.
"The suspension of construction aims to maintain conducive conditions and prevent social conflict," the regent wrote. "The local government is obliged to prioritize the interests of the wider community."
