Pope Tawadros II, 60, was selected today (November 4, 2012) as the new leader of the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church, according to the Daily Beast website.
The faith's adherents have dealt with increasing uncertainty since their last leader, Pope Shenouda III, died last March at the age of 88.
Copts in Egypt have been uneasy about their place in the country since the downfall of dictator Hosni Mubarak, and distressed by the rise of powerful Islamist factions.
Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's primarily Muslim 83 million population.
